Environmental Rehabilitation & Erosion Control

Erosion Control Services in South Africa

Threerae stabilises vulnerable surfaces on mines, roads and construction sites across all nine provinces — combining hydroseeded vegetative cover with practical structural measures to stop soil loss before it becomes a liability.

The Problem

Bare Ground Is A Liability With A Deadline

Every disturbed surface is losing soil from the moment it is exposed. The cost arrives later and larger: rilling and gullying that has to be reshaped, sediment in stormwater systems and watercourses, dust complaints, blocked drainage, undercut infrastructure, and rehabilitation obligations that grow instead of reducing. On mining and infrastructure projects it also becomes a compliance issue, because environmental authorisation conditions rarely tolerate uncontrolled sediment loss.

Our approach puts vegetation at the centre. Hydroseeding establishes cover quickly and evenly across large or difficult-to-access areas, and established vegetation is the only erosion control that gets stronger with time rather than weaker. Where the gradient, soil condition or rainfall intensity means the surface cannot survive the establishment window unprotected, we add structural measures for that period.

How we specify a control

Gradient, soil structure and chemistry, catchment area above the surface, rainfall intensity, drainage behaviour and the end land use all change the answer. We assess the site, specify the intervention against those conditions, and record what was applied where — so the control can be verified against the rehabilitation plan you report on.

Our Capability

Erosion Control Measures

01

Vegetative Cover

Hydroseeded vegetation established with site-specific seed, mulch, fertiliser and tackifier — the durable, low-maintenance long-term control on slopes, batters and disturbed land.

02

Slope & Batter Stabilisation

Protection of cuttings, embankments and steep faces where loose seed migrates downhill and unprotected soil rills within a single rainfall event.

03

Stockpile & Tailings Protection

Surface stabilisation and dust control on mine residue deposits, waste rock dumps and stockpiles, including active operating sites.

04

Sediment Management

Limiting sediment migration from disturbed surfaces into stormwater systems, drainage lines and watercourses during the vulnerable construction phase.

05

Mulch & Surface Treatments

Heavier mulch loadings and tackifier rates, and complementary surface treatments, where vegetation alone cannot hold the surface during establishment.

06

Monitoring & Maintenance

Follow-up assessment of cover against target, with remedial application where conditions have worked against establishment.

Questions

Erosion Control FAQs

What is the most effective erosion control method?

There is no single answer — the right method depends on gradient, soil type, rainfall intensity and how quickly the surface has to be protected. Established vegetation is the most durable and lowest-maintenance long-term control, which is why hydroseeding sits at the centre of our approach. Where the surface cannot survive unprotected during the establishment window, we combine vegetative cover with structural measures such as mulch blankets, contour interventions and sediment control.

How does vegetation control erosion?

Plant canopy intercepts rainfall so drops strike leaves instead of bare soil, which prevents the surface sealing and the particle detachment that starts sheet erosion. Root systems then bind soil particles and improve infiltration, so less water runs across the surface and what does run moves more slowly. The result is a self-maintaining control that strengthens over time rather than degrading like a purely structural intervention.

When should erosion control be installed on a construction site?

Before the disturbed surface is exposed to its first heavy rainfall event, not after the first failure. Sediment lost from a site is almost always more expensive to recover and remediate than it would have been to prevent, and uncontrolled sediment reaching stormwater systems or watercourses puts environmental authorisation conditions at risk. Plan the intervention into the programme alongside the earthworks.

Do you handle erosion control on active mine sites?

Yes. Tailings surfaces, waste rock dumps, stockpiles, haul road batters and disturbed areas on operating mines are core work for us, alongside closure-stage rehabilitation. We work within site access, safety and induction requirements and record application rates and coverage against your rehabilitation specification.

Talk To Threerae

Describe the surface, the gradient and what is at risk downstream of it. We assess the site, specify a control that suits the soil and the rainfall it has to survive, and quote in writing. If a rainfall season is bearing down on the programme, tell us — timing is usually the difference between control and remediation.
