Environmental Rehabilitation & Erosion Control
Land and Mine Rehabilitation in South Africa
Threerae restores disturbed land for mining, infrastructure and construction clients across all nine provinces — stabilising surfaces, managing growth medium and establishing self-sustaining vegetation that supports closure and compliance obligations.
What It Involves
Land That Holds Without Being Held
Rehabilitation succeeds when the surface no longer needs you. That means a stable landform, a growth medium capable of supporting plants, a vegetation community suited to the site and the agreed end land use, and erosion control that strengthens rather than degrades. Anything short of that is cosmetic, and cosmetic rehabilitation comes back as a repeat cost and a compliance conversation.
We work the problem in that order. Surfaces are assessed and prepared before anything is seeded, because seed placed on compacted or chemically hostile ground will not establish no matter how well the mix is specified. Hydroseeding then puts a precise, repeatable specification across large or difficult-to-access areas, and erosion control protects the surface through the vulnerable establishment window.
Progressive rehabilitation reduces the number you have to provide for
Rehabilitation left until closure compounds: unvegetated surfaces keep eroding and need reshaping, stockpiled soil loses the biological activity that makes it useful, and work concentrated into a short closure window costs more and fails more often. Rehabilitating concurrently with operations spreads the cost, keeps the financial provision aligned with the actual disturbed footprint, and gives you a demonstrable compliance record instead of a promise.
Our Capability
Rehabilitation Services
Site & Soil Assessment
Gradient, drainage behaviour, soil structure and chemistry assessed before specification — establishing whether the surface can support vegetation and what it needs first.
Topsoil & Growth Medium
Topsoil handling, placement and amendment so the growth medium can actually sustain the vegetation community the end land use requires.
Revegetation
Site-specific seed mixes applied by hydroseeding, using indigenous and locally appropriate species where the specification and end land use allow.
Erosion Control
Vegetative and structural measures protecting the surface through establishment, so the first heavy rainfall event does not undo the work.
Progressive Rehabilitation
Concurrent rehabilitation of disturbed areas on operating sites, reducing accumulated closure liability rather than deferring it.
Monitoring & Maintenance
Cover measured against target, with remedial application where conditions have worked against establishment, and records you can report from.

Questions
Land Rehabilitation FAQs
What is mine rehabilitation?
Mine rehabilitation is the work of returning land disturbed by mining to a stable, safe and productive condition consistent with an agreed end land use. In practice it covers reshaping and stabilising surfaces, managing topsoil and growth medium, establishing self-sustaining vegetation, controlling erosion and monitoring the result until it holds without intervention. It runs alongside operations rather than starting at closure.
Why does rehabilitation need to be progressive rather than left until closure?
Deferring rehabilitation lets the liability compound. Unvegetated surfaces keep eroding, which means more reshaping later; soil that sits stockpiled too long loses the biological activity that makes it a good growth medium; and closure-stage work concentrated into a short window is more expensive and more likely to fail. Progressive rehabilitation spreads the cost, keeps the provision aligned with reality and demonstrates ongoing compliance.
What determines whether revegetation succeeds?
Four things, in order: whether the surface is physically stable before seeding, whether the growth medium can actually support plants, whether the species mix suits the site's climate, altitude and end land use, and whether the application is timed to the rainfall window. Failures are usually traceable to the first two — seed placed on compacted or chemically hostile ground will not establish regardless of how good the mix is.
Do you work on active operations as well as closure?
Yes. We work on progressive rehabilitation on operating mines and on closure-stage programmes, and on land restoration for infrastructure, construction and agricultural clients. We operate within site access, safety and induction requirements and record what was applied where, so the work is verifiable against your rehabilitation plan.
