Environmental Rehabilitation & Erosion Control

Hydroseeding in South Africa

Threerae provides hydroseeding across all nine South African provinces — establishing fast, even vegetation cover on mine rehabilitation areas, road embankments, construction sites and disturbed land where conventional seeding does not hold.

What It Is

Fast, Even Vegetation Cover — Even On Ground That Fights Back

Hydroseeding is the spray application of a carefully specified slurry — seed, mulch, fertiliser, soil amendments and a tackifier — onto a prepared surface. The mulch holds moisture against the soil, the tackifier binds the mixture in place, and the seed germinates evenly instead of washing into the nearest drainage line. It is the most efficient method available for establishing vegetation across large or difficult-to-access areas, and it is our flagship capability.

Every mix is adapted to the site. We assess soil chemistry and structure, terrain and gradient, climate and the rainfall window, the vegetation outcome required, the erosion risk and the project specification — then build the slurry around those conditions. A tailings surface in Mpumalanga and a road cutting in KwaZulu-Natal do not get the same mix, and treating them as if they do is why rehabilitation fails and has to be repeated.

Why hydroseeding instead of hand seeding or sod

On flat, small, accessible ground, conventional methods work. On everything else hydroseeding wins on three counts: speed of coverage over large areas, adhesion on slopes and cuttings where loose seed simply migrates downhill, and cost per square metre at scale. It also lets us place a precise, repeatable specification on the ground — the same mix, the same loading, recorded and verifiable against the rehabilitation plan you have to report on.

Our Hydroseeding Process

Monitoring & Maintenance

1 — Site assessment

We walk the site, record gradients, access constraints and drainage behaviour, and assess soil condition. This determines the mix, the application rate and whether any structural erosion control is needed alongside the vegetation.

2 — Soil preparation

Compacted or chemically hostile surfaces are addressed before anything is sprayed. Scarifying, topsoil placement and amendments where required — seed applied to ground that cannot support it is money spent twice.

3 — Seed selection

Mixes are built for the site's climate, altitude and rehabilitation objective, using indigenous and locally appropriate species where the specification and the end land use allow.

4 — Application

The slurry is sprayed at a specified loading, with heavier mulch and tackifier rates on steeper or higher-risk surfaces. Coverage and rates are recorded as applied.

5 — Erosion control

Where the gradient, soil or rainfall intensity demands more than vegetation alone, hydroseeding is combined with complementary erosion-control measures so the surface is protected during the vulnerable establishment window.

6 — Establishment & monitoring

Germination and cover are monitored against the target, with follow-up maintenance or remedial application where conditions have worked against establishment.

Questions

Hydroseeding FAQs

What is hydroseeding?

Hydroseeding is the spray application of a slurry containing seed, mulch, fertiliser, soil amendments and a tackifier onto a prepared surface. The mulch holds moisture against the soil and the tackifier binds the mixture in place, so seed germinates evenly and stays put on slopes where broadcast seeding would wash away. It covers large or difficult-to-access areas far faster than hand seeding or sodding.

How long does hydroseeded grass take to germinate?

Under suitable conditions you can typically expect germination within 7 to 21 days and visible cover within 4 to 8 weeks, depending on the seed mix, season, soil condition and rainfall. Establishment is fastest when hydroseeding is timed ahead of the rainy season, which in most of South Africa means applying from early spring onward.

What does hydroseeding cost in South Africa?

Cost is quoted per square metre and depends on the area, site access, slope angle, soil condition, the seed mix specified and whether additional erosion-control measures or follow-up maintenance are required. Because those variables move the number significantly, we assess the site and issue a written quotation rather than publishing a rate. Larger areas attract a lower rate per square metre.

Can you hydroseed steep slopes and mine dumps?

Yes. Slopes, cuttings, embankments, tailings surfaces and stockpiles are where hydroseeding earns its value, because the tackifier and mulch keep seed in place on gradients that defeat conventional seeding. On steeper or higher-risk surfaces we specify a heavier mulch loading and may combine hydroseeding with additional erosion-control measures.

Which provinces do you work in?

Threerae services hydroseeding and rehabilitation projects across all nine South African provinces — Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Free State, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, North West and Northern Cape — with our office based in Gauteng.

When is the best time of year to hydroseed?

Aim to apply ahead of reliable rainfall so young seedlings get the moisture they need. For summer-rainfall regions that means spring through early summer; for winter-rainfall areas such as the Western Cape it means autumn. Planning the application around the rainfall window materially improves establishment rates and reduces the need for re-seeding.

Talk To Threerae

Tell us the site, the area and the rehabilitation outcome you need to achieve. We assess the ground, specify the mix and come back with a written quotation. If your rehabilitation has to be in place before the rains, say so in your message — scheduling around the rainfall window makes a measurable difference to establishment.
